EECU was formed by a group of Esso employees back in 1969 with the common goal of helping each other financially. The early motto was: "It’s not a business, it’s not a charity, it's a service to each other".

EECU has maintained an office within the ExxonMobil head office, which was originally in Sydney but moved to Melbourne in 1992 when Esso relocated. The Melbourne office is now conveniently located at 12 Riverside Quay in Southbank. The Credit Union also has operated from Sale since the 1970's, serving Gippsland members. In 2004, EECU constructed a new building on Cunninghame St, Sale.
Despite leaving Sydney nearly 20 years ago, EECU still maintains a strong Sydney membership and we hold an annual dinner to show our ongoing support.
